Our Old Hickory team ended the year on a high by finishing second at Totaradale on Thursday.

Led by captain Ian Hanford – who recorded the equal best individual score of the day with 37 stablefords – Waahi Taakaro totalled 131 points, six behind the home team who deservedly will hold the trophy until the new year.

The monthly tournament was supposed to be held at Waahi Taakaro but was moved to Totaradale in case we couldn’t access our own course across the river ford. However, we still hosted the day.

Ian got good support from Bryan Ramsey (35) with Mike Murphy (30) and Barry Rhodes (29) our other scorers. Mick Leggett (28) and Richard Pearson (27) were the non counters. Paul Tunnicliff (36) and Warren Green (27) completed the field.

Totaradale’s victory was built on good scores from Dennis Hall (37), Elton Netto (35), Ross Dalley (33) and R Frengley (32), with both Ross and Elton recording the only twos of the day.

There was a scramble for the minor placings, with Takaka grabbing third with 119 points. They were followed by Nelson (117), Tasman (116) and Motueka (114). Greenacres went home with the popgun after finishing last on 113 points.

The scoring was surprisingly high with just three golfers in the field of 44 playing to their handicap, while less than a third scored over 30 stableford points.

The next round is back at Totaradale on Feb 2.
