Our Old Hickory team narrowly avoided the popgun and slipped to third in the Club of the Year standings after a disappointing performance at Greenacres on Thursday (Oct 1).

With the all-conquering Motueka team winning yet again to increase their already unassailable lead, the remaining clubs were left to fight over the scraps.

With Bernie Walsh (39 stablefords) and Brian Miller (37) leading the way, Motueka won the Old Hickory round with a total of 147. On the back of a stellar 42 points from player of the day Greg Allen, Takaka finished second on 145. Nelson were third on 143, with home side Greenacres fourth on 142. Tasman was next on 136, with Waahi Taakaro back in sixth on 130.

On a day of generally better scoring in ideal conditions, Barry Rhodes and Graham Eggers were our top scorers with 34 points each. Dave Huntley and Ian Hanford added 31 apiece. Mick Leggett (30) and Richard Pearson (27) were our non-counters.

Totaradale (129) consigned the Golden Downs/Redstone (128) team to the popgun by the slimmest of margins.

Motueka's Keith Dowie potted the only two of the day.

Motueka (1673) extended its massive lead in the Club of the Year standings to 98 points over Takaka (1575), while Waahi Taakaro (1573) slips to third. We are followed by Nelson (1558), Tasman (1547), Totaradale (1534), Greenacres (1509) and Golden Downs-Redstone (1449).

The next round is at Golden Downs on November 5.
