Old Hickory team on the rise

After a series of ho-hum efforts our Old Hickory showed some improvement by finishing second on countback at Totaradale on Thursday (June 6).

However, there was no stopping the home team who eased to a comfortable victory in ideal winter conditions on a course in excellent nick.

Led by 39 stableford points from Elton Netto  - the top individual scorer of the day - Totaradale's total of 137 points was six better than Waahi Taakaro and Tasman who tallied 131 each.

But we got second thanks to having a better fifth score.

Phil Sellers was our shining light with a fine 38 points, with Peter Watson (32), Barry Mitchell (31) and Barry Rhodes (30) all contributing. Ian Hanford's 29 points helped us edge Tasman, while Graham Galt had an off-day with 27 points.

It was a timely boost for our team which was languishing in last place in the club of the year season-long points race after the wining the inaugural trophy last year.

Nelson finished fourth with 127 points. They were followed by Takaka (120) and Greenacres(113), while Motueka (111) retained the popgun for another month.

Just three golfers in the field of 44 managed 36 points or more.

Twos were slotted by Elton Netto, Dave Duggan, Brian Murray, John Barnett, John Atchison and Brian Biggs.

The next round is at Takaka on July 4.
