Pair's marathon day of golf for a good cause

Maree Thomas and Josh Denize looked remarkably fresh after playing golf virtually non-stop for more than 12 hours today (Jan 17) on another hot summer's day in the Maitai Valley.

During that time the Waahi Taakaro Golf Club pair completed a heroic 72 holes - or eight times round the 9-hole course - as part of a fundraiser for the Cancer Society.

Starting at 7am they walked the first nine in the early morning chill before taking to carts in order to preserve their energy and also to ease Josh's injured calf muscle - which he slightly tore playing cricket a few days before.

Apart from brief stops to eat, take on more fluids and grab a free ice cream from fellow club member and Gelato Rosa franchise owner Barry Mitchell, they motored on through the day. They were joined by fellow club members Peter Watson and Neil McLaren for their final nine holes, which Maree insisted on walking.

While unsurprisingly the golf from the two - who haven't played much up until their big day out - got a bit scratchy at times they still managed a good smattering of pars.

And over a cold drink afterwards on the clubhouse deck, they were already making plans to do it all again next year.

Congratulations to them for their marvellous effort.
