Popgun blues for Old Hickory team

Our Old Hickory team had a shocker at Tasman on Thursday (April 9) in finishing a distant last.

It was the second time in three rounds that we have ended up with the dreaded popgun leaving the selectors with plenty to ponder.

The dismal performance was in part due to our team’s inability to cope with Tasman’s tricky greens, with Mike Murphy our highest scorer with a barely passable 30 stableford points.

On a perfect day for golf our team score of just 107 was 11 points adrift of the next team. Barry Rhodes (27), Bryan Ramsey (26) and Graham Strickett (24) were our other scorers, while Phil Sellers (24) and Paul Tunnicliff (23) had forgettable rounds.

The home team showed how to play the course in totalling 129 points to win by three from Totaradale (126), Nelson (125), Motueka (121), Greenacres (119) and Takaka (118).

Joint individual top scorers of the day with 39 points were Andrew Fenemor (Motueka) and A Field (Tasman), while Bill Thwaites (Greenacres), Owen Pitman (Tasman), Allen Peacock (Tasman), David Barnes (Nelson), T Richards (Nelson), Robin Knight (Nelson) and Chris Jones (Tasman) all bagged twos.

The next round is at Takaka on May 6 when we hope for a much improved showing.
