RIP Kelvin Barkman

One of Waahi Taakaro Golf Club’s real stalwarts passed away on Saturday (March 23).

Kelvin Barkman – who had been unwell for some time,- was a prime figure in the earlier days of the club and since 2007 had served as our patron.

A contractor by trade, he helped form and develop the Maitai Valley course, spending countless hours on his digger and bulldozer. Just last year on a buggy trip around the course, he could still recall where all the irrigation lines and drains were.

He was also instrumental in getting the caretaker’s cottage built.

A no-nonsense man who was adept at raising funds and getting things done, he spent many years serving on club committees and working bees, including as president from 1999-2002. He was made a life member in 2011.

He later donated and sponsored a trophy in his name for a season-long competition that we continue to play for.

A wake was held at the clubhouse on Tuesday to celebrate his life and contribution to our club, which was attended by his wife Val and members of his family. We offer them our deepest condolences.

Rest in peace Kelvin.
