Simplicity Funerals Golden Oldies results for 1/10/25

Ray Hopgood prevailed in the latest Golden Oldies match of the day, a par round off the front nine.

Moved to drizzly Wednesday to accommodate the Old Hickory tournament on Thursday, Ray showed a clean pair of heels to top the standings with +3 playing off a 15 handicap.

Ian Hanford and Chris Louth shared second on +1, while Mick Leggett and Tony Ellmers tied for third with 0. Next were Tom Kennedy and Don Macbeth on -1.

There were no twos.

In a catch-up Club Champs quarterfinal match, Peter Watson advanced to the intermediate semifinals with a 4/2 win over Garth Jameson.

After being just one up after nine, Peter – the top qualifier – proved too steady early on the back nine to eventually coast to a comfortable win. After Peter won a messy opening hole, Garth chipped in for par to win No 2 to even it up. Peter then won the uphill No 4 with an up and down par before they squared the next five holes with bogies as Peter missed a series of mid-range putts.

Garth lost No 10 to a par after a wayward drive and then fluffed a couple of irons as Peter went three up at No 12. After a brilliant recovery from the trees, Garth missed a crucial short putt on No 13 for a win and then conceded No 14 after another mishit off the tee to go dormie. A fine par on No 15 saw him prolong the match but it was over at the next as he again found the trees off the tee and couldn’t get out.
