Our Sloan Trophy team won its first match of the season with a good win over Greenacres at Tasman on Sunday (March 30).
The pressure was on after defeats in the first two rounds, but the team responded strongly to win 7-2 and climb to a mid-table position.
Lewis Wilson set the tone at No 6 with a 4/3 win. The veteran leftie - who won his first three holes - drove the ball well and didn't make many mistakes.
Playing in his first Sloan match of the season, fellow leftie Neil McLaren also played solidly in building a lead and protecting it in his 3/2 victory.
Another making his season debut, Garth Jameson, showed the benefit of playing Tasman regularly over summer to coast to a convincing 5/4 win. Garth drove and chipped well on the way to a 79.
Our No 3 Gareth Edwards succumbed to a second-nine onslaught from a rival who came home with a 38. Gareth had a solid front nine and was four up at the turn but couldn't sustain it and slipped to a 2/1 loss.
Keri Kotua used all his match play experience to eke out a late 2-up win after a tight back and forth tussle where neither him or his opponent led by more than one hole.
Our No 1 James Campion had a day to forget where nothing worked well. Five down after nine holes, he rallied briefly with a birdie on No 10 but in the end was outclassed 6/5.
The next round is at Takaka this Sunday (April 6) where we play Motueka.
